It is very exciting to hear these news... I met Rosarelys last year during the EFEC (regional training for leaders of the Spanish Caribbean) that took place in Dominican Republic. I challenge her and others to be like Daniels as we worked together through the book of Daniel. Praise be to God! Rosarelys will be at World Assembly'11 in Poland.
"For the past three years, huge waves of crime have swept through the Universidad de Oriente (UDO) in Venezuela. It has not been uncommon for students there to witness daily clashes of various people with state officials, looting of delivery trucks, and even murders within yards of the classroom. ‘Our university was crumbling before us,’ writes Rosarelys Martínez, coordinator of the local group of MUEVE, the IFES movement in Venezuela. ‘The situation was complicated; much more if we consider the extreme indifference of university officials, student leaders and even the affected student community.’
In the midst of this critical situation, students of MUEVE asked themselves what they could do. ‘How could 15 students stir up the spirits of some 17,000 others? What could we do for our university?
‘We decided to be like Daniel. Someone said that before getting involved in such matters it’s necessary to have thick skin like an alligator, but we have a better hope – the support and protection of Jesus Christ.
‘We started praying in the streets, buildings and entrance to our university. While we knelt and sang "We Shall Overcome," we prayed to the Father for fair and professional student leadership, a committed student body, for people not to remain silent about the problem. Some non-Christian students joined us in the road.’
They continued to call on all leaders of different student associations to join them in establishing working groups to discuss the conflicts within the university and seek solutions to them. The first meetings were marked by poor attendance, but soon they were joined by groups as diverse as the Communist Youth of Venezuela and the Mathematics Students Association, and their small meeting place became packed with people. From these meetings emerged great ideas; one of them to convene a general meeting of students led by MUEVE members.
Rosarelys continues: ‘The first meeting was unforgettable. After praying with arms and legs shaking, we went to the auditorium. Jesus was the true moderator of the meetings, not us! At least 300 students debated calmly, and even better, they kept coming up with excellent proposals. About 30 students committed themselves to work with us in collecting signatures to encourage the development of a safety network.
‘To think that fifteen students worried whether trust in God was enough! We glorify God because he enabled us to rely not on ourselves, but on the truth of the gospel. We made the decision to be leaders in each of the activities that are now underway, and this has allowed us to greatly influence the process with a biblical perspective. We praise the name of the Lord that each activity has shaken not only students but also our university authorities, who now have given approval for this safety initiative.’
Give thanks with us that the students of MUEVE were bold in entering into the university’s political arena by organising others to take a strong stand against violence within the university. Pray for wisdom as they continue to take the lead in making the university a safe place.
Pray too for IFES movements all over the world as they face issues of social injustice, political turmoil, various forms of discrimination, and other important contemporary problems: that they will not be afraid to bring biblical principles to bear on these concerns, but instead will be leaders in bringing change to the university and society.

Es muy emocionante escuchar estas noticias... Conocí a Rosarelys el año pasado durante el EFEC (encuentro de formación de líderes estudiantiles del Caribe, que tuvo lugar en República Dominicana). La desafíe a ella y a todos los participantes a ser como Danieles cuando estuvimos estudiando el libro de Daniel juntos. ¡Alabado sea Dios! Rosarelys estará en la Asamblea Mundial'11 en Polonia.
"A lo largo de los últimos tres años, grandes oleadas de crímenes han barrido la Universidad de Oriente (UDO) en Venezuela. No ha sido extraño que los estudiantes sean testigos habituales de luchas entre varias personas y oficiales del estado, el expolio de camiones de suministros e incluso asesinatos a solo unos metros de sus clases. ‘Nuestra universidad se derrumba ante nosotros,’escribe Rosarelys Martínez, coordinadora del grupo local MUEVE, el movimiento IFES en Venezuela. ‘La situación es complicada; mucho más si pensamos enla indiferencia extrema de autoridades universitarias, los líderes estudiantiles e incluso la comunidad estudiantil afectada.’
En medio de esta situación crítica, los estudiantes de MUEVE se han preguntado qué podían hacer. ‘¿Cómo pueden estos 15 estudiantes conmover el espíritu de 17.000? ¿Qué podemos hacer por nuestra universidad?
‘Decidimos ser como Daniel. Alguien dijo que antes de involucrarnos con estos asuntos era necesario desarrollar una piel dura como la de un cocodrilo, pero tenemos una esperanza mayor, el apoyo y la protección de Jesucristo.
‘Iniciamos orando en las plazas, edificios y entrada de nuestra Universidad. Mientras permanecíamos de rodillas y entonábamos el “Nosotros Venceremos”, rogábamos al Padre por un liderazgo estudiantil y profesional justo, por una masa estudiantil comprometida, de esos que no se quedan callados ante el problema. Algunos estudiantes no cristianos se unieron a nosotros en el camino.’
Continuaron llamando a los líderes de las distintas asociaciones estudiantiles para que se unieran a ellos para formar grupos de trabajo y debatir acerca de los conflictos en la universidad y buscar soluciones. Las primeras reuniones estuvieron marcadas por una asistencia ínfima, pero pronto se les unieron grupos de diversa naturaleza como Juventud Comunista de Venezuela y la Asociación de Estudiantes de Matemáticas, y su pequeño lugar de reuniones se llenó de gente. Grandes ideas surgieron en estas reuniones, una de ellas era la convocatoria de una reunión anual de estudiantes dirigida por miembros de MUEVE.
Rosarelys continua: ‘La primera asamblea fue inolvidable. Tras orar con gran temblor en nuestros brazos y en nuestras piernas, fuimos al auditorio. Jesús fue el verdaderoárbitrode la reunión, ¡y no nosotros! Al menos 300 estudiantes debatieron con calma, e incluso mejor, siguieron aportando una propuestas excelentes. Unos 30 estudiantes se han comprometido y trabajan junto a nosotros en recolecciones de firmas que impulsen el desarrollo de un plan de seguridad justo para la universidad.
‘¡Y pensar que 15 estudiantes se preocupaban, preguntándose si su fe en Dios sería suficiente! Glorificamos a Dios porque nos llevó a no confiar en nosotros mismos, sino en la verdad del Evangelio. Tomamos la decisión de ser líderes en cada una de las actividades que se están desarrollando, y esto nos ha permitido tener una gran influencia en el proceso y dotarlo de una perspectiva bíblica. Alabamos el nombre de nuestro Señor, porque cada actividad ha conmovido a los estudiantes y a las autoridades universitarias, que han dado su aprobación a esta iniciativa de seguridad.’
Den gracias con nosotros porque los estudiantes de MUEVE fueron valientes al entrar en la arena política de la universidad organizando a otros para que tomaran una posición fuerte contra la violencia en la universidad. Oren por sabiduría según continúan liderando las iniciativas para hacer de la universidad un lugar más seguro.
Oren también por los movimientos IFES alrededor del mundo que afrontan problemas de injusticia social, tumultos políticos, diferentes formas de discriminación y otros problemas importantes y actuales. Oren para que no teman al traer los principios bíblicos a la palestra para influir en estas cuestiones, sino que se levanten como líderes para traer el cambio a la universidad y a la sociedad.
