Pray for IFES WA'11 - Ora por la Asamblea Mundial de IFES

Dear friends Greetings from IFES World Assembly 2011 in Krakow, Poland! The global celebration that you have been praying for is now well underway – and what a blessing it is already. On Tuesday I was part of a great stream of people flooding into Krakow from all over the world –young students who are eager to meet and learn from others, tired warriors who seek encouragement, and seasoned leaders who want to grow as mentors – over 600 participants from more than 100 countries. For the students, the conference began on Saturday, when they met to encourage one another and plan the special World Assembly student day. Hendrik from the Netherlands told me that this was a special time for him to build relationships with students he would never otherwise meet. ‘It was amazing in our small groups to get a good view of what is happening all over the world and to pray for all the countries represented.’ I talked to other students about their hopes for the rest of World Assembly. Catharina from Sweden said, ‘I want to be challenged, to go back home and inspire the rest of my group to get on their feet and get out and show who Christ is!’ Chris from Switzerland had slightly different goals: ‘I want to get new ideas for my movement. I’ve been a leader who encourages others for several years and now I can be encouraged. There is a danger that the ministry can become routine. I hope to get fresh energy and learn from others.’ Gabriel from Malaysia has a response to World Assembly that I hear echoed by many participants: ‘It’s exciting to meet so many people from so many cultures and countries, and to share our experiences. Most encouraging is hearing from people who have similar problems and are facing similar challenges as they try to reach out to others with the gospel. To hear how God is at work through them makes me realise that if he is with them, he is also with us in our own country. This encourages me to take home what I have learned and share with people, colleagues, classmates and friends so they can keep going and be light and salt for Jesus Christ, because he is the most important thing.’ In the midst of the celebration on Wednesday 27 July, we received news of the death of John Stott that afternoon at the age of 90. We paused to remember his life. A close friend of IFES, Uncle John once said, ‘I believe IFES to be one of the most strategic of all Christian movements today.’ How fitting that the Fellowship that he so wholeheartedly supported should be gathered together at the time of his passing! Countless people around the world can testify to the personal encouragement they received from Uncle John. When Lindsay Brown took over as General Secretary of IFES he received the following advice from John Stott - ‘be like iron in the essentials and like a reed in the non-essentials.' Yet Uncle John was also concerned with students, with the future generations of leaders that IFES was seeking to train. In an address to IFES World Assembly in 1999, he closed with these words: ‘Where are the Timothys of the rising generation and of the new millennium? That is, where are the young men and women who will resist the pressures of the prevailing culture, who will stand firm in their commitment to the authority of Scripture, and who will spend their lives in the liberating service of the gospel? Where are they? Will IFES develop and nurture them? You may be young, shy and weak. So was Timothy. You may live in a hostile environment. So did Timothy. But like Timothy you have all the resources you need, in the God-breathed Scriptures of the Old Testament and in the teaching and example of the apostles in the New Testament; they can guide, equip and inspire you.’ How appropriate these words are for us today at World Assembly! Give thanks with us for, in the words of Daniel Bourdanné, ‘This remarkable man of global vision and strategic insight, a special friend of IFES.’ Pray with us for God’s comfort to abound in the life of all those grieving the loss of a mentor and friend. Please continue to pray for all of us at World Assembly, as well as those who are following along at home. Pray that we might all grow in our understanding of what it means to be living stones, that our hearts might be open to being challenged by God, and encouraged in our service in his name. Pray that God will use this World Assembly to help the Fellowship to continue to meet the challenge posed by John Stott to develop and nurture a new generation of men and women who give their lives to the liberating service of the gospel. Queridos amigos ¡Saludos desde la Asamblea Mundial IFES de 2011, en Cracovia, Polonia! La celebración global para la que han estado orando ya está en pleno fulgor- ¡y es ya toda una bendición! Ayer fui parte de un gran río de personas que fluyeron hasta Cracovia desde todos los rincones del mundo; los jóvenes estudiantes están ansiosos de conocerse y aprender los unos de los otros, los guerreros cansados buscan recobrar el ánimo y los líderes de años quieren crecer como mentores. Más de 600 participantes han llegado desde más de 100 países. Para los estudiantes, la conferencia comenzó el sábado, cuando se reunieron para animarse los unos a los otros y planificar el Díadel Estudiante en la Asamblea Mundial. Hendirik, de Holanda, me dijo que este tiempo era muy especial para construir relaciones con estudiantes que jamás habría conocido de otra manera. "Era increíble cómo nuestros grupos pequeños podían obtener una buena visión acerca de lo que está ocurriendo alrededor del mundo y podíamos orar por los países aquí representados." Conversé con otros estudiantes acerca de sus expectativas para lo que resta de la Asamblea Mundial. Catharina, de Suecia, me dijo, "¡Quiero verme retada, quiero volver a casa e inspirar al resto de mi grupo para que se levanten y salgan a mostrar quién es Jesucristo!" Chris, de Suiza, tiene unas metas ligeramente distintas: "Quiero encontrar nuevas ideas para mi movimiento. Como líder me he dedicado a animar a los demás durante varios años, y ahora tengo la oportunidad de cobrar ánimo. Existe el peligro de que el ministerio se vuelva algo rutinario. Espero obtener una energía fresca y aprender de los demás." La respuesta de Gabriel, de Malasia, a la Asamblea Mundial es una que resuena entre muchos de los participantes de la Asamblea Mundial: "Es emocionante conocer a tanta gente procedente de culturas y países diferentes y tener la oportunidad de compartir nuestras experiencias. Lo que más me anima es oír las historias de otras personas que tienen problemas semejantes y que enfrentan retos parecidos a los míos cuando intentan llegar a los demás con el evangelio. El escuchar cómo Dios está trabajando a través de ellos me hace consciente de que, si él está con ellos, también lo estará con nosotros en nuestro propio país. Esto me anima a llevarme a casa lo que he aprendido y compartirlo con la gente, mis colegas, mis compañeros de clase y mis amigos para que ellos puedan seguir adelante y ser sal y luz para Jesucristo, porque él es lo más importante." En medio de las celebraciones del miércoles, 27 de julio, recibimos noticias del fallecimiento de Uncle John Stott esa misma tarde a sus 90 años. Nos tomamos un tiempo para recordar su vida. Uncle John, un gran amigo de IFES, dijo una vez, ‘"Creo que IFESes uno de los movimientos cristianos más estratégicos del momento." ¡Cuán apropiado es que la Comunidad a la que Uncle John apoyaba con todo su corazón estuviera reunida en el momento de su partida! Innumerables personas de todos los rincones del mundo pueden dar testimonio acerca del ánimo personal que recibieron de Uncle John. Cuando Lindsay Brown tomó el cargo de Secretario General del IFES, recibió el siguiente consejo de Uncle John - "debes ser como el hierro en las cosas esenciales y como un junco en las que no lo son." Pero Uncle John también se preocupaba por los estudiantes y por las generaciones futuras de líderes que el IFES estaba buscando para formar. En una ponencia en la Asamblea Mundial IFES de 1999, cerró con estas palabras: "¿Dónde están los Timoteo de la generación naciente y del nuevo milenio? Es decir, ¿dóndeestán los hombres y las mujeres jóvenes que resistirán la presión de la cultura dominante, que se mantendrán firmes en su compromiso con la autoridad de las Escrituras, y que pasarán su vida entera bajo el liberador servicio del Evangelio? ¿Dónde están? ¿Se desarrollará el IFES y los nutrirá? "Puede que sean jóvenes, tímidos y débiles. Timoteo también lo era. Puede que vivan en un ambiente hostil. Timoteo también. Pero, al igualque Timoteo, tienen todos los recursos necesarios en las Escrituras inspiradas por Dios en el Antiguo Testamento y en las enseñanzas y los ejemplos de los apóstoles en el Nuevo Testamento; las Escrituras les pueden guiar, equipar e inspirar." ¡Qué apropiadas son estas palabras para nosotros hoy en la Asamblea Mundial! Demos gracias por las palabras de Daniel Bourdanné, ‘"Este hombre increíble con su visión global y su entendimiento estratégico era un amigo muy especial del IFES." Oren con nosotros para que abunde el consuelo de Dios en las vidas de todos los que lloran la pérdida de un mentor y amigo. Por favor, continúen orando por todos nosotros en la Asamblea Mundial, al igual que por aquéllos que la están siguiendo desde sus casas. Oren para que crezcamos en nuestra comprensión de lo que implica ser piedras vivas, que nuestros corazones estén abiertos a ser retados por Dios y que cobremos ánimo para servir en su nombre. Oren para que Dios use esta Asamblea Mundial para ayudar a la Comunidad a llegar al reto que nos propuso Uncle John Stott de desarrollar y nutrir a una nueva generación de hombres y mujeres que vivan sus vidas bajo el servicio liberador del Evangelio.
