MEXICO: Mis fotos favoritas/MEXICO: My favourite shots

I have had a great time in beautiful Mexico. Below a summary in images.

Oaxaca

Chili is a basic ingredient in Mexican cuisine and it is hot!

Monte Alban:Before the Conquest.. indigenous people had beautiful things... there is little left but it is to be enjoyed to the day.

Mexico remains a very catholic country but people are hungry and thirsty for God. My friend was able to share the Gospel with a lady as we were visiting!

Tule

The oldest tree in the world: an ahuahuete of 2000 years! Isn't God's creation amazing?

Ciudad de Mexico/Mexico City

La catedral de Ciudad de Mexico.

Mexico City's cathedral.

This is the biggest bakery I have ever ever seen. I mean it: it is GIGANTIC. The "sweet bread" as it is called is baked in all shapes, tastes, colours. And people come to get their daily portion.

Lots of people, workers mainly, are very unhappy about some of the politics today. There was not one place I went that I did not see some demonstrations of some sort. Many are waiting for the next government to be elected in 2012.

Tlayacapan

Tlayacapan is one of the many towns, mainly touristy, where many, especially from DF, come to escape the big city. The former convent of Saint John the Baptist was declared World Heritage in 12996. It has 21 chapels. But I wonder how much devotion there really is.

The views in Morelos are breathtaking...

Ceramic is very varied and important part of the culture.

Cuernavaca

Cuernavaca has been called "the city of eternal sunshine" but the cutting of trees continues... The cathedral is naked of images and it has had problems with the eclesiastic authorities for not being catholic "enough".

Food is maybe, I dare to say, the most important aspect of the mexican culture. Maybe it is if the latinamerican culture in general. It all happens around the table. But not only food but relationships.

The "Zocalo" is the place to gather. Lots happen here.

There is much more but this is to give you a little taste...

They say that the tradition started in medieval Germany: if a married couple reached 25 years
of marriage, friends and neighbours will give the bride a silver crown, on the one hand to congratulate her of the good fortune of have extended the life of the couple so many years and on the other hand as a recognition of having had a harmonious life.

Today I celebrate 25 years since the Lord called me to himself and became my Saviour and Lord. The greatest gift after life itself.

I was born in a Christian home and was used to hear Bible Stories and to go to church as part of my life routine. As I became a teenager I was increasingly aware that I needed to put things right with God personally, that being a Christian is not something that you inherit but something much deeper. He was the Creator, he was God but I was living a life in my own terms; I was declaring myself "god". But I was stubborn and thought I was not good enough for God and tried to be better for him before he could accept me. I was fighting in vain and I was growing weary.

The church community was important and I enjoyed spending time with the youth group. It was St John's day in Spain and we had gathered to spend the evening together. Very very late at night we sang some loved songs in worship to God. It was simple but it was powerful and I felt again the touch of God. I did not delay this time. I acknowledged that Jesus, the son of God, had died on the cross so that I could be forgiven, repented of my sins and asked God to be my Saviour and to lead my life.

Life did not become easier. This is not what being a Christian is all about. But I had God, the all powerful, the one who wants my best, the one who protects, at my side.

It has been very important for me to have a fresh identity that makes sense and a new purpose for life. It is great to to be able to tell people about Jesus.

We have had a “harmonious” relationship only because he has been faithful and because his grace is infinite. The words in Revelation 19:7-8: Let us rejoice and be glad and give him glory! For the wedding of the Lamb has come, and his bride has made herself ready. Fine linen, bright and clean, was given her to wear."

I celebrate 25 years of “marriage” with the desire of celebrating many more until the great wedding.

· For the host movement ECU (Costa Rica): for the logistics team, for the Leadership of Fernando Montero and for the whole national movement.

· For the financial situation in the country: there has been a lot of variation with the dollar and this provokes a lot of uncertainty in the financial planning of this event.

· For the finances of this event: it is the first time in the history of the ENFOL’s since 1990 that each delegate has to pay 100% of the conference fees and travel. Let us pray that each student can raise the funds needed.

Día de todos los Santos - Varsovia , Polonia

(English version below)

All Saints Day

Today is November 1st, All Saint's Day. I have had meetings all day but I interrupt and take the opportunity to experiment how Warsaw, Poland, celebrates this day. It is, in many ways, similar to Spain.

We arrive to the cemetery. It is not the main one in Warsaw since there are lots of people going to the main one. But still, the amount of streets and the length of them surprises me from the first moment. Tombs are, in their majority, filled with beautiful flower centers and candles, lots of candles. Beautiful and modern candles inside their candle holders. The view is almost beautiful if I avoid thinking of what all this means... a real worship to the dead. Step by step I leave aside tomb after tomb dedicated of those who were one day. Some tombs even venerate people that do not even have names, these are tombs in memory of those who desappearedin the war and were never seen again. Here and there, people, alone or with their families, standing or sitting, laying flowers or litting candles, some make the sign of the cross, others pray.

And I ask myself , what is all this for? Like my aunty well said a while ago... "I like cioming to the cemetery, here we all become the same." Whatever we were, now we are dust. Like my friend who walks with me says "even those who grieve are the same at the cemetery". All this produces mix feelings... a little bit of repulsion, a bit of anger, a bit of confusion, even, a bit of compassion.

I remember, once again, that in Christ all things are very different. Jesus conqured death when he died at the cross for us. Also the cross represents the hope of an eternal life for all those who believe. The candles are a very pale reflection in contrast with the true light that came to the world and that takes us out of darkness into his wonderful light.

As I walk passing one tomb after the other, I also think... and what of the day that it will be my turn? how will I be remembered? Lots to think about...
